Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Creamy meets citrusy: Coconut milk adds a silky texture with fresh citrus
  • Quick and simple: Ready in 5 minutes with just a handful of ingredients
  • So pretty: Fresh blood orange gives it that gorgeous color.
  • Perfect for any occasion: Easy enough for casual sipping, but elevated for entertaining

Key Ingredients

See the recipe card for quantities.

  • Tequila blanco: I used Don Julio Blanco for its clean taste. Reposado or anejo would also be great and have a smooth oaky flavor.
  • Blood orange: For fresh squeezed juice.
  • Lime juice: Fresh squeezed is best!
  • Agave syrup: A natural sweetener that complements tequila. You can also use simple syrup or honey syrup.
  • Coconut milk: Canned Thai-style coconut milk works best. Other types may not mix as smoothly.
  • Sea salt, lime zest and blood orange zest: for rim

Substitutions and Variations

  • Tequila swap: Use mezcal for a smoky version.
  • Coconut alternative: Skip the coconut milk for a classic version, or use a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt for a creamy texture
  • Citrus swap: If blood orange isn’t in season, use navel orange or even grapefruit juice.
  • Frozen version: Blend all ingredients with ice for a creamy frozen margarita.
  • Mocktail version: Swap tequila for coconut water or chilled tea. Hibiscus would be great in this!

Coconut Blood Orange Margarita FAQs

Can I make a batch of Coconut Blood Orange Margaritas?

Yes! Combine ingredients ahead of time and refrigerate. When ready to serve, blend with a handful of ice or shake each drink individually with ice before serving over fresh ice.

Why is my coconut milk separating?

Canned coconut milk comes in different styles and a bit of separation is normal in your drink. For the smoothest cocktail, opt for Thai-style coconut milk and shake really well. If your coconut milk isn’t smooth when you open the can, blend it before using.

Can I make this Blood Orange Margarita without coconut milk?

Yes, just leave it out for a more classic blood orange margarita.
