The Pineapple Mezcal Mule is brimming with spicy ginger beer, pineapple, and lime juice. It’s a perfect choice for those who enjoy a more complex, smoky mule variation. This mule is garnished with lime, pineapple, and cilantro for a unique, aromatic touch that is just SO fresh!

What is a Mezcal Mule?

A Mezcal Mule is a twist on the classic Moscow Mule, replacing vodka with mezcal, a smoky agave spirit.

Typically served over ice in a copper mug or glass, a mezcal mule combines mezcal with ginger beer, lime juice creating a refreshing, slightly smoky, and tangy cocktail.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Mezcal: Pick a high quality mezcal for a bold, smoky depth that pairs beautifully with the tropical sweetness of pineapple. If you don’t like the smoky flavor of mezcal, replace with your favorite tequila.
  • Ginger beer: Pick a good quality ginger beer (not ginger ale) so you really get the spicy ginger taste. I used Q Mixers Light Ginger Beer which is a bit less sweet than your typical ginger beer.
  • Pineapple juice: Look for 100% juice or juice your own
  • Lime juice: Fresh is always best!
  • Pineapple slice and frond, lime and cilantro: Optional but fun garnishes.

Tips For Making a Pineapple Mezcal Mule

  • Chill your ingredients.
  • Swap mezcal for tequila if you don’t like a smoky drink. If you like a little bit of smoke, try half tequila and half mezcal!
  • For a less sweet mule, try a light ginger beer like I did or use a combo of ginger beer and club soda.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s in a pineapple mule drink?

A pineapple mule typically includes a base spirit like vodka, tequila or mezcal, pineapple juice, lime juice, and ginger beer, served over ice and often garnished with pineapple or lime.

What is a good mixer for mezcal?

Great mixers for mezcal include pineapple juice, grapefruit juice, ginger beer, citrus (like lime or orange), and even sparkling water—anything that balances it’s smoky flavor without overpowering it.

What’s the difference between a Moscow Mule and a Mezcal Mule?

A Moscow Mule uses vodka as its base spirit and includes ginger beer and lime juice. A mezcal mule swaps in mezcal instead of vodka for a smoky, more complex twist on the classic cocktail.
