Easy Tequila Mule (Mexican Mule)
The Tequila Mule (aka Mexican Mule) is a riff on a Moscow Mule made with tequila, ginger beer and lime juice. It’s bright, spicy and tart and comes together in just a couple minutes! If you love mules and margaritas, this simple cocktail is for you.

The Tequila Mule is an absolute crowd-pleaser. I love that it gets whipped up in minutes right in the glass, uses only 3 ingredients and the recipe can be scaled up easily. I made them with a brightly spiced ginger beer from Q Mixers and finished mine with a sprinkle of Tajin.
What’s the Difference Between a Moscow Mule and a Mexican Mule?
A Moscow Mule is a cocktail made with vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. It’s the original version of the drink. A Mexican Mule is a twist on the classic. This version swaps vodka for tequila.
Recipe Ingredients
See the recipe card for quantities.
- Tequila: Choose a good-quality tequila. I like a blanco tequila but a reposado would work great as well.
- Ginger beer: Pick a good quality ginger beer (not ginger ale) so you really get the spicy ginger taste. I used my favorite from Q Mixers.
- Lime juice: Fresh lime juice is always best.
- Tajin or chili lime salt: Optional but a nice addition to add a bit of spice to the drink.
- Lime wedges, edible flowers and fresh mint: Optional for garnish.

Why are mules served in copper mugs?
Mules are traditionally served in copper mugs which are known to keep your drink colder for longer. They are also great aesthetically for presentation. Some people even think they enhance the flavor of your mule.

What Food To Pair with Tequila Mules
- Tacos: Try them with carnitas, fish, or veggie tacos. They’d be fun with a DIY taco board.
- Guacamole and chips: The creamy, salty richness of guacamole contrasts beautifully with the mule’s bright, limey flavor.
- Grilled shrimp or chicken skewers: Lightly seasoned proteins are mellow as a partner to the Mexican mule.
- Street corn (Elote): The smoky, spicy-sweet flavors of grilled corn with cotija cheese and chili powder naturally match a Tajín-rimmed Mexican mule!
