Key Ingredients

See the recipe card for quantities.

  • Mexican beer: Make sure it’s ice cold. Light, crisp lagers like Corona, Modelo or Pacifico work best.
  • Clamato: Adds a savory, umami-rich tomato base that defines a classic michelada. You can always swap with bloody mary mix or tomato juice.
  • Pickle juice: Totally addictive, I used Grillo’s in this Clamato Michelada.
  • Lime juice: Freshly squeezed for brightness.
  • Soy sauce: A dash enhances depth and umami.
  • Hot sauce (optional): Adds heat and complexity: adjust to taste.
  • Tajín (for rim): Brings chili-lime zing and a signature michelada finish.
  • Pickle (optional garnish): Adds visual appeal and extra flavor.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Turn up the heat: Add extra hot sauce or muddled fresh chili.
  • Change the brine: Try spicy or garlic pickle juice or swap for the brine from a jarred pepper like pepperoncini, jalapenos or banana peppers.
  • Boost the flavor: Add some Worcestershire sauce or Chamoy
  • Make it alcohol-free: Use your favorite non-alcoholic beer for an easy mocktail version.

How to Make Best Clamato Michelada

I love making them right in the bottle or can, but you can also make it in a glass with ice.

Step 1: Before opening the beer, run a lime wedge around the neck of the bottle. Sprinkle with Tajin until coated.

Step 2: Carefully open the bottle and take a few sips (about 1/3 of the beer) to create space.

Step 3: Add Clamato, pickle juice, lime juice and soy sauce directly into the bottle. Add hot sauce, if using. Gently tilt once or twice to combine.

Step 4: Add a pickle for a bold, briny finish.

Best Clamato Michelada FAQs

What is a Clamato Michelada?

A Clamato Michelada is a savory Mexican beer cocktail made with light beer, Clamato (a tomato mixer with a hint of clam broth), lime juice, and seasonings. This version adds pickle juice for an extra briny, tangy twist.

What does Clamato taste like?

Clamato has a savory, slightly salty tomato flavor with a subtle seafood note. It adds depth and umami to micheladas, similar to the base of a Bloody Mary or Caesar.

How do I keep the drink from overflowing when adding ingredients to the bottle?

Take a few sips out of the beer first to create space and add ingredients slowly. Be sure not to add Tajin directly to the bottle.
