Tequila Painkiller cocktail in small glass decorated with mint, blood orange and cranberries surrounded by Christmas decorations

Winter Painkiller (Blood Orange Tequila Painkiller)

This Winter Painkiller is a rosy-hued cocktail ideal for a holiday girls’ night or a tropical-themed Christmas party! Coconut, blood orange, pineapple, and nutmeg blend perfectly with the rich, burnt caramel flavor in the Lobos 1707 Reposado Tequila.

This post was made in partnership with Lobos 1707 Reposado Tequila. The recipe and ideas are my own.

Winter Painkiller (Blood Orange Tequila Painkiller)

The Winter Painkiller is a riff on a traditional painkiller, which is rum-based. Here, I’ve swapped rum for Lobos 1707 Reposado Tequila and used blood orange juice instead of orange juice for a wintery feel.

This rendition also has less pineapple juice than a traditional painkiller cocktail. This ratio gives a better balance and lets the white chocolate, marshmallow, dried orange peel, birch, sarsaparilla, and burnt caramel in this tequila shine through.

Why you’ve Got to Try Lobos 1707 Reposado Tequila

Lobos 1707 Reposado Tequila has been hailed one of the world’s top five tequilas by Forbes Magazine! This tequila is taken through a meticulous aging process, delivering a rich, spicy taste that is flavor-forward. It’s an incredible base to play with!

Recipe Ingredients

  • Reposado Tequila: I used Lobos 1707 Reposado Tequila. This smooth, aged (7 months in American oak!) tequila provides a rich, woody foundation with burnt caramel and spice undertones.
  • Blood orange juice: Freshly squeezed blood orange juice is ideal.
  • Pineapple juice: Use a good quality juice without added sugar.
  • Cream of coconut: This adds a creamy texture and rich coconut taste.
  • Freshly grated nutmeg: I love the festive flavor this adds.
  • Shredded coconut: This is to coat the rim with – think snow-capped…
  • Blood orange slice, mint, cranberries: For garnish.

Sipping Tips & FAQs

How to make a batch of the Winter Painkiller cocktail:
To make a large batch, scale the recipe and add all ingredients to a blender with a handful of ice. You want to add enough to chill and dilute the cocktail without making it frosty. Blend until smooth, and then serve it over crushed ice.

Can I use ice in any format in my tequila painkiller?
Crushed or nugget ice works well with this cocktail.

Cream of Coconut: What you should know
When choosing your cream of coconut, note that there is a difference in sweetness and consistency in cream of coconut, coconut cream, and coconut milk.

  • Cream of coconut is a thick, sweetened cream (you often find it in piña coladas).
  • Coconut cream is thick but unsweetened and is best for cooking with.
  • Coconut milk is thinner than the other 2 coconut products. You find it added to soups and curries.

Side note: If you use canned cream of coconut, I recommend blending first for a smooth consistency.

Make Ahead and Storage Notes

If you want to scale up the recipe to make it for a crowd, that’s fine – see my notes above on how to scale up. You can prepare the cocktail ahead of time by mixing the tequila, the blood orange and pineapple juice, and the cream of coconut.

Store this mix in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Remember to stir it all together before making your drink.
