Fresh, seasonal produce is one of my favorite sources of inspiration for my recipes, so I wanted to share what fruits and vegetables to look out for this March. Shopping for produce when it is in its peak season ensures it has the best quality and taste and can also save you money!
Produce that is in peak season in March includes artichoke, asparagus, blood oranges, broccoli, cauliflower, grapefruit, kiwi, kumquats, oranges, parsnips, passion fruit and turnips.
March seasonal produce is amazing for mixing up delicious citrus-based cocktails and mocktails. Some of my favorites like kiwi and passion fruit are also found in March.
Blood oranges are typically available from December to April. Fresh squeezed blood orange juice is an amazing addition to cocktails and mocktails. Some of my current favorites are my Morning Glow (Healthy, Collagen Mocktail) and Winter Painkiller (Blood Orange Tequila Painkiller). You can check out more of my blood orange recipes here.
Grapefruit is in peak season from November to early spring. Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice adds bitter citrus notes to beverages. Try it in the Eternally Grapefruit or my Grapefruit Rose Mocktail Spritz.
This tropical fruit may make you think summer, but kiwis are actually in peak season from late autumn to early spring. Try it muddled or pureed in cocktails and mocktails. Try it in a cocktail like Kiwi Be Friends? or non-alcoholic drink like the Kiwi Crush Mocktail.
Kumquats are a small citrus fruit, the size of grapes. They are known for their tart flavor and can be enjoyed whole – skin and all! They are in season and available from winter to early spring. Try them in these Kumquat Ginger Margaritas by Kendall Andronico.
Navel oranges, tangerines and clementines are in season fall to early spring. You can even try fresh tangerine juice in any recipe that calls for orange juice for a fun twist. My favorites include the Citrus Basil Smash Mocktail and Tropical Tangerine Aperol Spritz.
Passion fruit starts popping up at my farmer’s market this time of year and is perfect for bright, tropical cocktails! Its peak season is February to June. You can use the pulp or juice in cocktails and mocktails. I love it in a Passion Fruit Caipirinha (Caipirinha de Maracuja) or a Passion Fruit Ginger Mocktail.
