These midnight margaritas are a frozen, coconut-lime twist on the iconic cocktail from Practical Magic, made with blanco tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, and sweet cream of coconut. They come together in just 5 minutes and are the perfect spooky cocktail for Halloween parties, Practical Magic movie nights, or a cozy night in. The frozen texture makes them feel especially fun and festive, while the lime keeps the coconut from becoming too sweet.

With the new Practical Magic movie coming out and the official start to the fall season, I thought it was a perfect time to create a new version of the midnight margarita. Whether you’re watching the 1998 original or the 2026 sequel, (spoiler alert!) the iconic kitchen tradition is back nearly 30 years later… So what better time to grab your blender and make your own!

Since I’m all about putting my own spin on popular drinks, I decided to turn these into a frozen coconut margarita. The result has a velvety texture and a nostalgic tropical flavor while still keeping that classic tequila + lime foundation. It’s dangerously delicious!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Quick and simple: Add everything to a blender, blend, and pour – no complicated cocktail technique required.
  • It puts a creamy twist on the classic margarita: Cream of coconut adds sweetness and a smooth texture that works well in a frozen drink.
  • Perfect for spooky season: The movie scene inspiration makes these especially fun for a spooky girls’ night, Halloween party, or Practical Magic watch party.
  • The black salt rim makes them feel extra magical: The dark rim against the pale frozen margarita gives the drink a dramatic look without requiring food coloring.
  • You control the sweetness: The cream of coconut provides plenty of sweetness on its own, but simple syrup can be added if you prefer a sweeter margarita.
  • Easy to batch: Perfect for sharing with your favorite witchy cocktail companions.

Key Ingredients

See the recipe card for quantities.

  • Blanco tequila: A clean, bright blanco tequila works best here and lets the lime and coconut flavors come through. Tres Agaves Blanco is a great option for this recipe.
  • Cointreau or triple sec: Adds the orange-citrus flavor you expect in a classic margarita. Cointreau gives a slightly more polished orange flavor, while triple sec is an easy budget-friendly alternative.
  • Fresh lime juice: Freshly squeezed lime is important because its tartness balances the sweetness of the cream of coconut.
  • Cream of coconut: The key to the creamy frozen texture and coconut flavor. (Note – cream of coconut is sweetened, unlike canned coconut milk or unsweetened coconut cream).
  • Simple syrup: Optional. I skipped it when making mine, but add it if you prefer your margaritas on the sweeter side.
  • Ice: Creates the frozen, slushy consistency. Use plenty of ice and blend until smooth.
  • Black sea salt: Its earthy, slightly briny flavor pairs nicely with the sweet coconut and tart lime. It also adds a dramatic finish to the rim.

🍹 Expert tip: Don’t accidentally grab canned coconut milk when shopping for cream of coconut. They’re not interchangeable without adjusting the sweetness. Cream of coconut is specifically a sweetened coconut product commonly used in cocktails.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Use coconut cream: Canned coconut cream can work if that’s what you have on hand, but because it isn’t necessarily as sweet as cream of coconut, you may want to add simple syrup to taste.
  • Use canned coconut milk: This can also work in a pinch, but expect a less sweet and slightly less creamy margarita. Add simple syrup or agave as needed.
  • Make it sweeter: Add the optional simple syrup. Start with a small amount and taste before adding more.
  • Use triple sec instead of Cointreau: Both provide the orange flavor needed for a margarita, but triple sec is typically the more accessible option.
  • Make it extra coconutty: Use a coconut-forward tequila (like Los Sundays Tequila Coconut Blanco) or add a small amount of coconut liqueur, adjusting the sweetness as needed.
  • Skip the black salt: Regular kosher or flaky sea salt works if you don’t have black sea salt.
  • Make it a mocktail: Replace the tequila with a zero-proof spirit or chilled tea and swap orange liqueur for fresh orange juice. Adjust the lime juice and sweetness to taste.

How to Make Practical Magic Midnight Margaritas (Frozen Coconut Margarita)

Step 1: Prepare the Glasses

Add black sea salt to a shallow dish. Moisten the rims of two glasses with honey or a little citrus juice, then dip the rims into the salt until coated.

🍸 Prep tip: The glasses can be rimmed a little ahead of time and set aside while you make the margaritas.

Step 2: Blend the Frozen Margaritas

Add tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, cream of coconut, ice, and simple syrup (if using) to a blender. Blend until smooth and creamy.

Step 3: Serve

Divide the frozen margaritas between the prepared glasses.

Step 4: Garnish

Garnish with dried lavender and a dehydrated lime wheel – I love the DEHY Garnishes! Add the broom garnish for an extra witchy touch if desired.

🔮 Presentation detail: The pale coconut-lime color paired with black salt and dried lavender gives these margaritas their “midnight” feel without needing to turn the actual drink black.

Carolyn’s Tips for Making Practical Magic Midnight Margaritas

  • Cream of coconut note: Cream of coconut is sweetened. Canned coconut milk and coconut cream are unsweetened. If you substitute for a different ingredient, adjust sweetness accordingly.
  • Simple syrup: Adjust sweetness depending on your taste. I make mine without any simple syrup.
  • Make a large batch for a Practical Magic movie night: Multiply the recipe as needed and blend in batches if your blender isn’t large enough to comfortably hold the full amount.

Practical Magic Midnight Margaritas FAQs

What are the Midnight Margaritas from Practical Magic?

The Midnight Margaritas are the margaritas featured in the iconic kitchen scene in the Practical Magic film. The scene has become one of the movie’s most recognizable cocktail moments and has inspired numerous modern recipes. Traditional versions of the Practical Magic Midnight Margarita are generally based around tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and salt. This version adds cream of coconut and ice for a frozen/creamy coconut twist. (Fun fact: the margaritas shown in the movie scene are actually blended so this recipe is very fitting!)

What is the difference between cream of coconut and coconut cream?

Cream of coconut is a sweetened coconut product commonly used in cocktails, while coconut cream is generally unsweetened. Because cream of coconut already contains sugar, it provides both coconut flavor and sweetness in this margarita.

Can you make Midnight Margaritas ahead of time?

These are best served immediately after blending for the smoothest frozen texture. But for entertaining, you can prep the salted glasses and garnishes ahead of time, add all the ingredients except for the ice to the blender, then just before serving, throw in the ice and blend everything together.

Can you make non-alcoholic Midnight Margaritas?

Yes. Replace the tequila with a zero-proof spirit or chilled tea and swap orange liqueur for fresh orange juice. Adjust the lime juice and sweetness to taste. You can also try my popular Pineapple Coconut Mockarita recipe.
