Cookies and cream is my husband’s favorite ice cream, so I thought it would be exciting to turn that nostalgic flavor into a cocktail! The idea was to put my own spin on a traditional White Russian by incorporating Oreo cookies. This basically makes the drink a dessert in a glass which is great for a cozy Halloween happy hour or as a fun after-dinner treat when you want something festive without having to put together an entire party spread. And once you have the Oreo cream vodka made and the chocolate cookie part crushed, the cocktail itself comes together in just a few minutes. I mean let’s be honest, who doesn’t like a boozy cookies and cream treat!?

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • 🍪 Tastes just like cookies and cream: Oreo cookies bring chocolate cookie flavor while the cream and vodka create the classic sweet, creamy profile.
  • ☕ A fun twist on a White Russian: Kahlúa adds coffee flavor that keeps the drink from tasting overly sweet.
  • 🎃 Perfect for Halloween: The Oreo bat garnish makes an easy cocktail instantly festive without needing complicated Halloween decorations.
  • 🥃 Easy to make: Once the Oreo cream vodka is ready, everything goes directly into the glass.
  • 🍸 No cocktail shaker required: Stir everything together over ice for a super simple dessert cocktail.
  • 👯 Great for entertaining: The bat garnishes can be prepared ahead of time for Halloween parties.

Key Ingredients

See the recipe card for quantities.

  • Oreos: You’ll use the cream for infusing the vodka and the cookies for the cocktail.
  • Vodka: Pick your favorite high quality vodka. I used Tito’s.
  • Coffee liqueur: I used Kahlúa which adds a rich coffee flavor and balances the sweetness of the Oreo cream vodka.
  • Half-and-half: Gives the White Russian its creamy texture without making the cocktail quite as heavy as using heavy cream.

🍪 Expert tip: The crushed Oreos should be almost powder-like. If needed, sift the crumbs through a fine mesh strainer before adding them to the cocktail.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Use store-bought cream vodka: If you don’t want to make your own Oreo cream vodka, substitute a vanilla or whipped cream vodka, though the Oreo flavor won’t be quite as pronounced.
  • Swap the half-and-half: Whole milk will make a lighter drink, while heavy cream will make it richer and more dessert-like.
  • Try a different coffee liqueur: Kahlúa is known for a sweet, syrupy profile with intense chocolate and vanilla notes, but brands like Tia Maria or Mr. Black could also work.
  • Make it extra chocolatey: Add a small drizzle of chocolate syrup or chocolate bitters.
  • Try a different cookie: Use chocolate sandwich cookies in place of Oreos if desired.
  • Make it a Halloween White Russian: Keep the Oreo bat garnish for a spooky-but-cute presentation.
  • Turn it into a larger-format drink: For a Halloween gathering, prepare the Oreo cream vodka in advance and mix individual cocktails as needed.

How to Make a Cookies and Cream White Russian

Make the Oreo Cream Vodka

Step 1: Separate 10 Oreos in half and scrape out the cream filling into a blender. Add the vodka and blend until smooth.

Step 2: Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove any remaining solids.

Make the Cookies and Cream White Russian

Step 1: Finely crush the Oreo cookies (chocolate cookie part only). Then sift it through a mesh strainer so you don’t have large chunks. The sifting is optional but helpful for a smoother cocktail.

Step 2: Fill a rocks glass with ice. (I love these ribbed cocktail glasses for a fun, textured presentation). Add Oreo cream vodka, Kahlúa, half-and-half, and finely crushed Oreo cookies. Stir with a bar spoon until combined.

Step 3: Add an Oreo bat garnish if desired and serve immediately.

How to Make Oreo Bats

You’ll need:

  • Oreos
  • Candy eyes
  • Cookie icing

Directions:

Step 1: Separate one Oreo in half and scrape out the cream filling.

Step 2: Cut one cookie half in half with a sharp knife to create the bat wings.

Step 3: Separate the remaining Oreo in half, keeping the cream filling on the cookie. Press the bat wings into the cream filling, then top with the other cookie. If needed, use cookie icing to help secure the cookies together.

Step 4: Use a dot of cookie icing to attach the candy eyes to the top of the Oreo bat.

🎃 Party tip: Make the Oreo bats ahead of time and keep them in a container until you’re ready to serve.

Carolyn’s Tips for Making Cookies and Cream White Russian

  • Crush the Oreos very finely: Large pieces won’t incorporate as smoothly into the cocktail. I’d recommend using a food processor or a ziploc bag + rolling pin or sifting with a mesh strainer.
  • Make the Oreo cream vodka ahead: Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1-2 weeks. Shake well before using and if separation occurs, blend briefly to reincorporate the cream.
  • Half-and-half swaps: Whole milk, non-dairy milk and heavy cream can be substituted. The creaminess of the drink will depend on the dairy you choose.

Cookies and Cream White Russian FAQs

What is a Cookie and Cream Cocktail made of?

This cookies and cream cocktail combines Oreo cream vodka, coffee liqueur, half-and-half, and finely crushed Oreo cookies for a creamy dessert-style drink inspired by a classic White Russian.

Can you make Oreo cream vodka at home?

Yes. Blend the cream filling from Oreos with vodka (I prefer a smooth, neutral vodka), then strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove solids.

What coffee liqueur is best for a Cookie and Cream Cocktail?

I personally think Kahlúa is a great option, but other brands will also work, they just might change the flavor profile and texture of the cocktail a bit. For example, Baileys already contains cream so you will need to adjust your ingredient proportions so the drink isn’t overwhelmingly heavy or sweet. Always taste before serving!

What is a good garnish for a Cookies and Cream Cocktail?

An Oreo cookie, crushed Oreo rim, whipped cream, chocolate drizzle, or an Oreo bat can all work well. An Oreo bat is especially fun for Halloween!
