The internet has been buzzing with the viral snow globe cocktails. I wanted to create my own version of these Insta-worthy drinks, that are not only delicious but super easy to make. The Snow Globe Margarita is made with a smooth blanco tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice. The drink is made with just 4 simple ingredients, but here’s where the real fun comes in. Set the backdrop with pebble ice to hold up your mini marshmallow snowmen, rosemary sprig pine trees, and super cute and edible holiday decorations. Rim the glass with marshmallow cream and shredded coconut and top with a slushy lid for a winter wonderland in a glass.

If you want to add some extra cheer to your holiday margarita, this is the perfect way to do so. Fun, festive, and easy-to-make, it’s perfect for a holiday cocktail party, family gathering, or winter-themed shower.

Recipe Ingredients

See the recipe card for quantities.

  • Tequila: A blanco tequila works well for this recipe. I used LALO Tequila, a smooth blanco.
  • Cream of coconut: This is usually found with the mixers at the grocery store. Cream of coconut is sweetened, making it different from coconut milk or coconut cream. If you substitute for an unsweetened coconut milk, you’ll likely want to add an additional sweetener.
  • Cointreau: I recommend Cointreau but any triple sec will work in this recipe.
  • Lime juice: Always use fresh squeezed lime juice.
  • Shredded coconut: For the rim.
  • Marshmallow cream or icing: For the rim. Marshmallow cream, otherwise known as Fluff, can be found at most grocery stores. You can also make your own Marshmallow icing at home and use extra on any baked goods or dessert.
  • Rosemary, icing holiday decorations, mini marshmallows: Use for garnish as desired. For the rosemary, make sure to purchase fresh sprigs.

Step 1: Prepare glass – Add shredded coconut to a shallow dish. Spread marshmallow cream along the rim of the glass. Dip in the coconut until the rim is coated.

Step 2: To a cocktail shaker- Add tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, cream of coconut and ice. Shake until well chilled.

Step 3: Fill the prepared cocktail glass with pebble ice or crushed ice. Strain the cocktail mixture into the glass.

Step 4: For the snow globe presentation, add more ice if necessary. Garnish with a marshmallow snowman on a toothpick, icing decorations, and rosemary sprigs as trees. Rest the slushy lid on the glass (glass should be smaller than the lid so the coconut rim is inside).

Tips for Making a Snow Globe Margarita

  • Use cream of coconut, not coconut cream or milk. Cream of coconut is thicker and sweeter than coconut cream and milk. Substituting will alter the consistency and sweetness of the cocktail.
  • Choose a glass that is slightly smaller than the slushy lid and rest it on the glass. To get the true snow globe presentation you need the lid to rest on the glass.
  • Use pebble or crushed ice. This will allow for ice that mimics snow in the glass, while also providing a foundation for the decorations and garnishes to build the snow globe display.
  • Mocktail version: Eliminate tequila and Cointreau. Add 2 oz coconut water and 1 oz fresh orange juice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between cream of coconut and coconut cream and milk?

The main difference between cream of coconut and coconut cream and milk is the level of sweetness. Cream of coconut is typically sweeter and can usually be found with cocktail mixers in the store. If you want to substitute for coconut cream or milk the drink will be far less sweet, so you’ll need to add an alternative sweetener. Another major difference is cream of coconut is much thicker than coconut cream and milk, which alters the consistency of the drink.

Can I prepare a batch of Snow Globe Margaritas for a party?

Yes. Add all ingredients to a blender. When ready to serve, blend with a handful of ice and divide into glasses. You can also prep the glasses ahead of time. Rim and coat the desired amount of glasses with the marshmallow cream or icing and coat with the shredded coconut

When should I use pebble or crushed ice in a cocktail?

You should use pebble or crushed ice in a cocktail when you have a drink with a higher concentration of sweeteners or syrup. The pebble ice helps dilute the sweetness properly and cools the drink quicker. For the Snow Globe Margarita it also acts as a foundation for the fun holiday decorations and garnishes.

  • 1 ½ oz tequila, I used LALO Tequila Blanco
  • 1 oz Cointreau or triple sec
  • 3/4-1 oz lime juice
  • 1 oz cream of coconut, see notes
  • Shredded coconut and marshmallow cream or icing
  • Snow globe garnish: Rosemary, icing holiday decorations, mini marshmallows

Instructions

  • Prepare glass – add shredded coconut to a shallow dish. Spread marshmallow cream along the rim of the glass. Dip in the coconut until the rim is coated.
  • To a cocktail shaker- add tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, cream of coconut and ice. Shake until well chilled.
  • Completely fill the prepared cocktail glass with pebble ice or crushed ice. Strain the cocktail mixture into the glass.
  • For the snow globe presentation, add more ice if necessary. Garnish with a marshmallow snowman on a toothpick, icing decorations and rosemary sprigs as trees. Rest the slushy lid on the glass (glass should be smaller than the lid so the coconut rim is inside).

Notes

  • Cream of coconut is different from coconut cream and coconut milk. You usually find it with cocktail mixers at the grocery store. It adds sweetness to the cocktail, so if you substitute for coconut milk or coconut cream, you may need to add another sweetener.
  • For the snow globe presentation, choose a glass that is smaller than the slushy lid and rest it on the glass.
