Affagato Carajillo

The Affogato Carajillo was inspired by two regional drinks. The classic Italian affogato, where hot espresso is poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. And the Mexican carajillo, a simple cocktail made from espresso and a Spanish liqueur called Licor 43. It’s a coffee cocktail that marries the boldness of Licor 43, intensity of double espresso, and the creaminess of vanilla ice cream.

Licor 43 is a golden liqueur renowned for its distinct blend of 43 natural ingredients, including citrus and vanilla. It perfectly complements the richness of espresso and sweetness of vanilla ice cream. If you don’t have an espresso maker, strong, freshly brewed coffee works here too. This cocktail comes together in 5 minutes and should be enjoyed immediately! Cheers!

Ingredients for Affagato Carajillo

  • Licor 43: A golden liqueur with a unique blend of citrus and vanilla notes, adding a layer of complexity and warmth to the drink.
  • Double Espresso Shot: The robust and concentrated flavor of double espresso gives a kick to this coffee cocktail. You can sub 2 ounces of strong, freshly brewed coffee as well.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream: Opt for a quality vanilla ice cream here. I used Haagen-Dazs.
  • Dark Chocolate: Shaved dark chocolate crowns this drink for decadence in every sip! I like Lindt 70% Cocoa Dark Chocolate Bar.

How to Make Affagato Carajillo

Creating the Affogato Carajillo is a breeze, making it perfect for both coffee and cocktail lovers alike!

Start by combining Licor 43, double espresso, and ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake the mixture until it’s well chilled. In a coupe glass, place a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Strain the cocktail mixture over the ice cream. Top the Affogato Carajillo with finely shaved dark chocolate. You can use a microplane or box grater for this step. Enjoy immediately to savor the contrast of temperatures and flavors!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Licor 43?

Licor 43 is a golden liqueur renowned for its distinct blend of 43 natural ingredients, including citrus and vanilla. It adds a unique and warm flavor profile to the Affogato Carajillo, making it a key component of this coffee cocktail.

Can I use regular coffee instead of double espresso?

While I recommend double espresso for its concentrated flavor, you can use strong, freshly brewed coffee as a substitute. Keep in mind that the intensity of the coffee will influence the overall character of the Affogato Carajillo.

Can I use instant espresso instead of double espresso?

In a pinch, you can substitute instant espresso for double espresso, but the flavor may differ slightly. Dissolve the instant espresso in a small amount of hot water before adding it to the cocktail shaker for a concentrated coffee taste.

What other ice cream flavors can I use?

Vanilla ice cream provides a classic and complementary base, but feel free to experiment with other flavors like caramel, hazelnut, or even cinnamon.
