My dad was born in the Philippines and I’m always excited to learn more about Filipino culture, food and drinks. So when I heard about the Kagatan, a traditional Filipino cocktail that comes together with three simple ingredients in under five minutes, I knew I had to try it!

Kagatan is a classic cocktail that fuses the robust essence of cold brew coffee with the sweetness of condensed milk and the unmistakable character of rum. This well-balanced, three-ingredient concoction stands as a testament to the beauty of simplicity. Kagatan offers a distinctive flavor profile that’s both familiar and intriguing, making it an enticing option for those looking to explore the world of cocktails with a touch of Filipino flair.

The cold brew provides a bold backdrop, while the sweetened condensed milk adds a touch of creamy sweetness. If you’re dairy free, opt for sweetened condensed coconut milk as an alternative. I used Kasama Rum, a rum from the Philippines, but feel free to use whichever rum you have on hand. If you’re looking for a refreshing cocktail that packs a punch of caffeine (and culture) in every sip, look no further than this cocktail.

Ingredients for the Kagatan

  • Cold Brew Coffee: Begin with a foundation of smooth cold brew coffee. You can use your favorite brand or prepare your cold brew at home.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk: Sweetened condensed milk adds a creamy sweetness to the Kagatan and balances the bold coffee and rum flavors perfectly. You can also use sweetened coconut condensed milk. I used Eagle Brand.
  • Rum: Infuses the cocktail with depth and character. Use your favorite, I like Kasama.
  • Coffee Beans, Edible Flower: If you’re looking to elevate the visual appeal of your Kagatan, garnish it with a few coffee beans and an edible flower.

How to Make the Kagatan

The Kagatan is the pick-me-up that couldn’t be easier to mix up! Start by adding the cold brew and sweetened condensed milk to a cocktail glass. Stir gently until the condensed milk blends with the cold brew. Fill the glass with ice. Pour in your preferred rum. Give it a gentle stir. If desired, sprinkle a few coffee beans and add an edible flower.
