What is a White Wine Spritzer Made Of?

A classic white wine spritzer is made with just 2 main ingredients – white wine and club soda. The proportions of these 2 ingredients can be adjusted depending on your taste but my favorite white wine spritzer recipe includes 3 parts white wine to 1 part club soda, served over ice for the perfect balance.

White wine spritzers are a great base for customizing and adding ingredients like I did in the Grapefruit White Wine Spritzer. This fruity spritzer is great when grapefruit is in season during the fall and winter but it’s also fresh enough for spring and summer months.

What is the Best Wine for a Spritzer?

One of the best parts about a white wine spritzer is that you can make it with your favorite white wine. Some of my favorites choices are pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc and gewürztraminer.

For this easy recipe, I chose Gewürztraminer from Fetzer Wine. Fetzer Gewürztraminer is perfectly sweet, crisp, and fragrant. Gewürztraminer is a white wine varietal that originates from the region of Alsace which is located near the France and German border. This wine has been celebrated for centuries in these countries for its unique taste.

Gewürztraminer is usually enjoyed young to preserve its floral and aromatic notes. The Gewürztraminer varietal from Fetzer is crisp and slightly dry with tasting notes of honeyed apricot, peach cobbler, cashew nuts, and pastry flavors. To the nose, it includes aromas of rose petal, honeysuckle, peach, and mango.

Ingredients for the Grapefruit White Wine Spritzer

  • White Wine: I love a sweet white wine to balance the bitterness of the grapefruit juice. Fetzer Gewürztraminer is bursting with crisp floral notes and a fruity flavors like apricot and mango. You can also try another white wine like Pinot Grigio or Riesling
  • Grapefruit juice: Fresh squeezed pink grapefruit juice is best but store bought also works. If you don’t have grapefruit juice, you can substitute it for another citrus juice like orange juice with a little bit of lemon juice.
  • Club soda: a spritzer is not complete without a bit of bubbles. Club soda, sparkling water or seltzer all work.
  • Whole pink peppercorns: Top this cocktail with some whole pink peppercorns for a beautiful finish and a bold scent of spice.
  • Garnish: Garnish with some fresh sage or a sprig of rosemary and a slice of grapefruit.

How to Make the Grapefruit White Wine Spritzer

After you’ve assembled your ingredients, there are just a few steps to achieve this spritzer!

Start filling a wine glass with ice cubes (you can check out my favorite glasses here). Then add white wine, grapefruit juice and club soda and give it a stir. Next, sprinkle the top of the cocktail with whole pink peppercorns. This is optional but I think the color from the peppercorns looks so pretty topped on this cocktail! The last step is to garnish with a sage sprig and grapefruit slice or whatever fresh herb and citrus you have on hand.
