What is a ‘Smash’ Cocktail?

Smash cocktails consist of just a few ingredients that can be changed to achieve different tastes but with overall similar components. Typically in a smash cocktail, you’ll have your elements which include: a sweetener, some type of herb, your spirit of choice, seasonal fruit, ice, and maybe a little water.

For the Blackberry Smash, I wanted to keep this drink recipe fresh and simple and allow the ingredients to let the Romana Sambuca shine since that’s such a special element!

How to Make the Blackberry Smash

I love picking up a perfectly ripe carton of blackberries and munching on them for a juicy snack. So, when I recently grabbed some from the market that were soft, sweet, and had a hint of tartness at the end, I knew they would be perfect for the Blackberry Smash!

Start by adding the blackberries and lemon juice to a cocktail shaker and muddle the two ingredients until everything is mixed well and the juice is a bit of a thicker consistency. Allow for the berry and citrus notes to fuse together and create a tart and lightly sweetened flavor. The muddling process is also important because the better the ingredients are muddled the more vibrant the cocktail color will be since the blackberries give the mixed drink its beautiful hue. Then, add Romana Sambuca and ice and shake vigorously or until the outside of the cocktail shaker is chilled. Strain the mixture into your preferred cocktail glass over fresh ice and top with a splash of sparkling water (I use San Pelligrino but I like Topo Chico or La Croix too). Remember to garnish your cocktail with blackberries and a mint sprig for a finished look.

Ingredients for the Blackberry Smash

Grab these ingredients to make the Blackberry Smash!

  • Romana Sambuca: This specialty Italian liqueur is the base of the cocktail. It brings a unique flavor to the recipe.
  • Blackberries: I love using blackberries for this recipe but any fresh berries would work. Try it with blueberries, strawberries or raspberries instead.
  • Lemon Juice: Fresh-squeezed lemon juice is best!
  • Sparkling Water: Use a splash of sparkling water or club soda for bubbles.

What’s Romana Sambuca?

Romana Sambuca is a specialty Italian liqueur infused with hints of elder bush and anise. It has earthy notes from the combination of herbs and spices, but finishes with a lightly sweetened taste. When mixed with other ingredients, Romana Sambuca adds a unique flavor. This liqueur is 84 proof.

What I love about Romana Sambuca in this Blackberry Smash recipe is that it brings unexpected herbaceous notes to the berry and citrus flavors in the cocktail.
