The Watermelon Basil Mocktail

What recipe are you enjoying for National Watermelon Day? The Watermelon Basil Mocktail is the ideal drink to sip on for the occasion! It’s easy to make and non-alcoholic. This watermelon mocktail is mixed with a blend of fresh ingredients like watermelon juice, lime juice, basil, honey syrup, and cucumber sparkling water. P.S don’t forget to pair this pretty mocktail with some other watermelon favorites, like this Voluspa Candle in the Kalahari Watermelon Fragrance which inspired this drink. It has a refreshing scent of wild watermelon, crisp cucumber, and earthy basil, with a dash of white cardamom and lime zest. Check out more of Voluspa’s candles here!

Ingredients for the Watermelon Basil Mocktail

  • Watermelon juice: fresh watermelon juice makes this mocktail sweet and so refreshing. I recommend making your watermelon juice at home by blending cubed watermelon and straining it through a mesh strainer. Or you can purchase fresh watermelon juice from grocery stores such as Sprouts or Whole Foods
  • Basil leaves: add some herbaceous basil to add a hint of earthiness to this drink.
  • Lime juice: a squeeze of fresh lime adds zesty, citrus notes which balance well with the watermelon juice.
  • Aquafaba: I used aquafaba to create the foamy froth in this mocktail. This is the liquid from a can of garbanzo beans. Aquafaba is a vegan alternative to egg white. A fresh egg white could also be used as an alternative.
  • Honey syrup: for some sweetness add in your favorite honey with a splash of hot water. I used Local Hive Honey. You can also substitute this for agave syrup, or simple syrup.
  • Cucumber sparkling water: I used Spindrift Cucumber Sparkling Water but your favorite sparkling water will work!
  • Pink peppercorns: this mocktail is topped with a sprinkle of pink peppercorns which you can find in the spice aisle.
  • Watermelon slice and cucumber ribbon: garnish this mocktail with a fresh piece of watermelon and cucumber ribbon for a finished look!

How to Make the Watermelon Basil Mocktail

I love making this Watermelon Basil Mocktail because it gives me an excuse to make homemade watermelon juice. If you want to make yours from scratch too, cut your watermelon into cubes and add it to a blender. Next, blend it up until smooth. Use a mesh strainer over a pitcher and pour the watermelon mixture through the strainer. Using a wooden spoon or spatula, press any excess juice through. Pour the watermelon juice into an airtight, sealable jar and use it over the next few days.

Time to make this watermelon mocktail! Start by adding the watermelon juice, smacked basil leaves, lime juice, honey syrup, and aquafaba to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously until the mocktail mixture is foamy. Add cucumber sparkling water to a coupe glass. Strain the mocktail mixture into the glass. If desired, garnish with a watermelon slice and cucumber ribbon. Sprinkle with pink peppercorns.
