The Italian Sunset Sour blends my favorite Italian elements: Italian gin, Aperol, fresh zesty lemon, and aromatic basil. Simple syrup balances out the tartness in this drink, feel free to adjust according to your sweetness preference. This refreshing cocktail is topped with a velvety foam that transports you to the sun-drenched Amalfi Coast with every sip!
And there’s nothing like savoring a beautifully crafted cocktail in an equally gorgeous glass. I chose to serve the Italian Sunset Sour in the elegant Veneziano Mixology Coupe from Zafferano. I absolutely adore the versatility and quality of their glassware, which has quickly become my go-to for all my favorite Italian-inspired bevs!
Zafferano, established by the esteemed Venetian glassmaker Federico de Majo, has been a pioneer in exquisite glassware design since 2001. With a rich history that traces back to the early ’70s, Zafferano blends traditional craftsmanship with innovative design across its product range.
Known for the elegant Veneziano Mixology Coupe and vibrant Poldina table lamps, Zafferano’s offerings encapsulate Italian elegance, bringing an artistic flair to dining and drinking experiences worldwide. Each piece is not just functional but a true piece of art, enhancing any culinary setting or home décor with a touch of sophistication.
This cocktail is a celebration in itself and mixing it is part of the fun!
Start by combining Aperol, Italian gin, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, egg white, and basil leaves in a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until the shaker feels cold to the touch.
Then, strain the mix to remove ice and basil, and shake again without ice. This “dry shake” is the secret to achieving the perfect creamy froth.
Pour the mixture into an elegant coupe glass — like the Veneziano Mixology Coupe from Zafferano America. As the final touch, garnish with an edible flower.
What makes Italian gin different from other gins?
Italian gin often features botanicals native to the region, offering a distinctive Mediterranean twist that complements Aperol’s flavor profile beautifully in this cocktail.
Can I skip the egg white?
While the egg white contributes to the cocktail’s creamy texture, you can omit it for a lighter version. Use aquafaba as a vegan-friendly alternative.
How do I ensure my sour is perfectly balanced?
Balance in a sour comes from the right ratio of sour (lemon juice) to sweet (simple syrup), with the complexity of the Aperol and gin. Always taste and adjust according to your preference before serving.
What can I pair with this cocktail for a complete experience?
Serve the Italian Sunset Sour with light appetizers like caprese skewers or shrimp bruschetta. These dishes complement the cocktail’s bright flavors without overwhelming it.
